Medievalism and National Identity: A Study of Medieval and Modern Arthurian Literature

The nineteenth century saw the revival of Arthurian literature with medieval texts being edited, published, and translated, and new texts being written. It was also a century when new identities were created in the British Isles. This research will try and answer the following questions: What are the roles of Arthurian literature and medievalism in the construction of national identity? In what sense has Arthur been constructed as a British, English, or Welsh hero?
