First Campus Activities

Students

Cardiff University is a member of First Campus – the Reaching Wider Partnership which covers South East Wales. Reaching Wider was established in 2002 by the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales. Its mission is to break down perceived barriers to higher education and widen access to learning. Through collaboration, First Campus delivers a series of activities for a wide cross section of pupils and adult learners. Activities complement the curriculum, enrich studies, and encourage participation.

Cardiff University currently delivers a number of projects for First Campus:

Confident Futures

This specialist programme is run with the support of Caerphilly, Bridgend and Rhondda Cynon Taf local authorities and is designed to raise aspirations and promote opportunities for young people leaving care. It includes a residential summer school and a homework support club. Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan local authorities are also becoming involved with this programme.

Discovery

This unique programme offers a taste of university life to those with Asperger's Syndrome. A residential summer school which allows students with Asperger's Syndrome and their carers to come and experience university life to help them make informed decisions in the future. This programme has been recognised by specialists as an example of good practice. Staff have provided advice to the Welsh Government in this area.

GCSE Maths and English Language Revision Courses

An intensive three- day Maths revision course or two-day English language revision course is offered to Year 11 pupils in partner schools who are studying towards their GCSEs. The courses are held during the Easter holidays and are located in four further and higher education institutions across south-east Wales.

Uni Inspiration Days

Uni Inspiration Days are run as events through a First Campus partnership between Cardiff University, Cardiff Metropolitan University, University of South Wales & Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama. They aim to promote higher education and raise aspirations and provide an opportunity for students to explore their study options post 18. There is an opportunity to meet current university students from a range of subject areas, attend workshops and parents are also invited along to the subject fair and a presentation on the benefits of higher education.
