UK School Games
Cardiff University is pleased to announce that it will be hosting the athletes’ village for the UK School Games 2009 which will take place between the 3rd & 6th September. All the athletes will be staying at the Talybont halls of residence, for further information on this accommodation please visit the University Residences section.
The UK School Games seeks to create an inspirational and motivational setting which encourages more young people to take part and succeed in sport. It is a multi-sport event for Britain’s best young sportsmen and women of a school age (18 years old and under). The athletes will be representing their specific area of the UK with the winning team being announced at the closing ceremony which is to be held during the evening of Sunday 6th September at the Cardiff University Sports Centre – Talybont. Some events will be contested strictly between England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales but in others some countries will be split into a number of teams. For example, in Swimming England will split into 4 separate teams – England Central, England East, England North and England South.
The event is made up of 10 different sports, with track cycling being the only addition for the 2009 event. The others are Athletics, Badminton, Fencing, Gymnastics, Hockey, Judo, Swimming, Table Tennis and Volleyball. There is also an integrated programme of disability events in Athletics, Swimming and Table Tennis. In total there will be over 1500 athletes competing in the UK School Games 2009 making it one of the largest multi-sport events outside of the Olympics. Each Sport will be hosted at specialist locations across South Wales. For example the track cycling will be at the Velodrome in Newport and the athletics will be in the Cardiff International Sports Stadium. For further information, including a full schedule of events, please visit the UK School Games 2009 website.
