Cardiff University is entering a new era in performance sport as it looks to build on previous success and take a lead in promoting sporting success at university. Cardiff University has adopted a new strategy for sport which aims to support sporting excellence while also supporting student-athletes through a high level academic course.
Cardiff has over the last few years been consistently ranked in the top 20 sporting institutions in the UK and this success is recognised with ex-students including Robin Sowden-Taylor (Cardiff Blues and Wales Rugby Union), Pete Gardner (Great Britain Rowing, Athens Olympian), Oliver Cooper (Great Britain Senior Men's Hockey), Mark Pettini (Essex County Cricket 1st XI), Kylie Paynter (Wales Netball) and Natalie Lewis (Great Britain and Wales Athletics). To aid the future development of athletes Cardiff University has developed a valuable high performance programme that enables student-athletes to continue their sporting careers alongside their education.
Cardiff University is involved in specialist programs in cricket, through the MCC run Universities Cricketing Centres of Excellence, in Badminton, through a partnership with the Welsh Badminton Union High Performance Centre in Cardiff and internal programmes for Golf and Rugby. The University currently employs a full time Head of Rugby who oversees the development of the Men's and Women's clubs. These sports have been selected as sports the University wishes to develop and establish among the top institutions in the UK. Cardiff University is also actively looking to make further partnerships with other National Governing Bodies.
