Coach Education Programme
Cardiff University Sport and Cardiff University Students Union are currently launching an all new Sports Coach Education Programme. The programme will be delivered from November 2010 onwards.
The main objectives of the programme are to encourage individuals to progress within coach qualification pathways and to assist the development of existing qualified coaches through additional, higher level awards and courses. It is anticipated this will allow the selected students to gain paid and voluntary experience whilst working within Sport Cardiff, National Governing Bodies, the University Athletic Union and local schools and junior teams/clubs.
A grant has been secured from the Millennium Stadium Charitable Trust which will be used to reimburse student coaches for the costs of their respective coaching courses. Ten sports will be catered for in the first year and these include: Cricket, Football, Hockey, Rowing, Rugby, Badminton, Canoeing, Netball, Swimming (and water polo) and Cycling. Successful applicants will initially have to fund the cost of the coaching course. Once the relevant course has been completed successfully the students will have to undertake a minimum of 10 volunteering hours. This will be done within Cardiff University Athletic Union clubs, Sport Cardiff, National Governing Bodies and local schools and junior teams/clubs. After each session the student must ask a senior official within the organisation to sign off their coaching log book which provides details of each session – type of session, length of session etc. Once the volunteering hours have been completed the cost of the course will be reimbursed accordingly.
Before the students can undertake any practical experience they must firstly either provide a clear CRB check or be willing for one to be conducted as soon as possible after being awarded a place on the programme.
As indicated above, the stipulations on any successful applicant are that they must willing to join the Sport Cardiff coaches pool for their respected sport and be actively coaching within the community or within their AU team. It is essential aspiring sports coaches are organised, good communicators, good leaders, confident and can manage their time well and hence these traits will be beneficial to any student interested in being part of this programme.
Successful applicants will benefit from the programme by gaining National Governing Body qualifications, increasing their potential to earn extra income as a student, enhancing their CV and developing leadership and communication skills. Previous sports coaching experience and qualifications will be advantageous but are not necessary.
The programme will be managed by staff within Cardiff University Sport who will liaise with internal and external organisations to place the students onto relevant courses and into the right environment to gain valuable experiences as a coach.
