Event: Gym for Heroes 24 Hour Gym Challenge!

5 July 2011

“Gym for Heroes” is a nationwide challenge that is held in fitness centres & gyms raising money for Help the Heroes.

As part of the “Gym for Heroes” challenge, 6 members of the Cardiff University Sport team are each aiming to complete 24 hours continuous exercise on specific cardiovascular equipment.

Cardiff University Fitness & Squash Centre staff, Richard Jones, Greg Bassam, James Fooks,  Steve Williams, Beth Winstanley and Taz Ebrahim all aim to complete the full 24 hours using either a treadmill, vertical bike, stepper, cross trainer or rowing machine with only ‘essential rests’ allowed.

Team members Leila Hughes and Stephanie Hislop also intend to complete the 12 hour challenge the day before.

The challenge ‘rules’ are:

  • 24 (12, 6. or 3) hours continuous exercise, only toilet breaks are allowed.
  • 3 pieces of cardio-vascular equipment can be chosen for the challenge, these can be switched between as many times within the 24 (12, 6. 3) hours as the individual wants.

The team will undertake the 24 hour challenge at the University Fitness & Squash Centre starting at 6pm on Friday the 22nd of July and finish at 6pm on Saturday the 23rd.  The Centre will be open and operating normal hours during this time. .

The 8 team members will be really looking to push themselves to the limit during the event and although there is no official competitive nature to the event there will certainly be some friendly rivalry to see who may cover the furthest distance over the time periods.

12 and 24 hours non-stop exercise will be a significant feat to achieve. For some just staying awake for that period will be hard enough without the exercise! To put the event into perspective, a marathon takes an average person between 3 - 5 hours to complete, so time wise the 12 hour challenge is equivalent of  completing between 2 - 4 marathons and the 24 hour challenge equates to completing 5 - 8 marathons consecutively!

We aim to raise over £1000 from the event, so please support the team by sponsoring them!

All donations are appreciated no matter the size. A dedicated “bmycharity” website has been set up where donations can be made. All forms of support will be appreciated during the challenge, especially during the last few hours!
