Main Roles and Responsibilities
As an associate lecturer I am primarily aligned to the non-medical prescribing post graduate diploma module. I arrange the clinical patient assessment days for the course and also lecture on areas such as clinical decision making and scope of practice in relation to independent prescribing.
I am employed by North Cardiff Medical Centre as a Nurse Practitioner and I work independently within the team, seeing previously undiagnosed patients for primary assessment along with formulating management plans, appropriate referrals, follow up reviews and prescribing where it is deemed necessary. I have an interest in female health, mental health, cardiovascular disease and paediatric minor ailments.
I have been in the primary care arena for the past 20 years working as a practice nurse and gaining my specialist practitioner qualification in this area in 2003. After gaining my supplementary prescribing certificate (2004) and then my independent prescribing qualification (2007), I decided to change roles from practice nurse to advanced practitioner and gained my masters in 2010, writing my dissertation on clinical decision making and prescribing.
Academic interests
I am interested in prescribing and the issues surrounding this area such as consultation skills, decision making and diagnostic reasoning. I am also interested in primary care development relating to nursing practice.
