Research Interests
My principal research interests lie in the field of community mental health care. In my PhD, which was part-funded through the award of a Smith and Nephew Foundation Nursing Research Fellowship, I used sociological theories of the division of work to underpin an ethnographic investigation into the organisation and delivery of interprofessional and interagency community care to people with severe mental health problems. More recently, as a Research Capacity Building Collaboration Wales (rcbcwales) Postdoctoral Fellow I have investigated the impact and integration of new crisis resolution and home treatment (CRHT) services, and into the range of factors helping and hindering the management of user transitions across CRHT teams and other parts of the mental health system. I am joint convenor (with Dr Michael Coffey, Swansea University) of a Mental Health Research Network Cymru research development group established to investigate the organisation and delivery of services.
Career Overview
I joined the Cardiff School of Nursing and Midwifery Studies in 1997, leaving a post as a community mental health nurse in East London. Since then I have maintained a steady output of journal papers, book chapters and conference presentations. I am a founding member of the South Wales Mental Health Nursing Journal Club and Seminar Group, and jointly represent (with Linda Cooper) the Cardiff School of Nursing and Midwifery Studies at Mental Health Nurse Academics UK (MHNAUK).
Teaching Profile
I teach students on courses from pre-registration undergraduate through to professional doctorate levels, and supervise postgraduate research students.
