Nursing Careers For All
Cardiff School of Nursing and Midwifery Studies is recognised for its considerable success in attracting and retaining students from families who have little or no history of going to university, and the Nursing Careers For All project aims to build on this success.
Nursing Careers For All is a pilot project based in Cardiff, offering courses, sessions, and visits to the University, including information, advice and guidance sessions delivered in Communities First areas. The project's activity is put together in consultation with community leaders, teachers and students to ensure content and delivery is appropriate for the needs of the participants.
By improving relationships with local schools and community groups and offering new pathways to learning in Higher Education, it seeks to increase the opportunities for a fulfilling and successful career for under-represented groups within the nursing and midwifery professions.
Project Aims
- To raise awareness amongst target groups of the benefits and advantages of the nursing and midwifery professions
- To raise aspiration and attainment levels of under-represented groups
- To improve the knowledge and skills of the individuals we work with, increasing their ability to make a successful application to university and Cardiff School of Nursing and Midwifery Studies
- To increase the diversity of our nursing and midwifery student cohorts

Student Mentors
Student mentors are recruited from our current student cohorts offering one-to-one support and guidance to aspiring potential students. Current nursing and midwifery students are paired with pupils from Years 12 and 13 who are interested in pursuing a course in nursing or midwifery. Our students receive thorough training in mentoring support, and their role is to inspire, support and encourage pupils as they begin to discover their own potential. Student mentors continue to provide support through the application process and often as their mentees embark on their chosen course of study.

NCFA in the News
A recent Nursing Careers For All 'Experience Day' gave several students from local Communities First areas a taste of a nursing degree programme.
Cardiff SONMS welcomed 30 students from Communities First areas to a 3 day Summer School last week as part of the School's Nursing Careers For All project.
