No-one could accuse Erving Goffman of being a drama queen. Yet the dramaturgical sociologist captures something quite significant about everyday life. We manage the impression we give to a high degree, and often quite consciously. Every individual is their own spin doctor, a little Peter Mandelson presenting themselves in the best light. This might not be news to most people, only to academic sociologists. Which explains why they are so badly dressed.
