Sub Groups

Within CERG there are three closely related research groups:

  • The Education Policy Schooling and Society group (EPoSS)

  • The Psychology Group (HumDeL)

  • The Education Work and Lifelong Learning group (EdWoLL)

You can find out about each of these groups below.

The Education Policy Schooling and Society Group (EPoSS)

This Group has an extensive programme of research projects, for the most part funded by the ESRC and charitable foundations. It is currently strategically focused in four areas:

  • organisational change and organisational learning in schools

  • the social impacts of changes in educational policy

  • the determinants of school attainment

  • methodological development and training

Recent major research grants have funded work on: patterns of participation in life long learning; the role of technology in widening participation in life long learning; measuring markets in the public sector; changes in public sector higher education; children's use of new technologies in the home; the comparative performance of boys and girls at school in Wales; the future role of higher education within teacher education and training. In addition the group is also the location for the ESRC 'Teaching and Learning Research Capability-building Network' providing methodological support and training for educational researchers across the UK.

The Psychology Group (HumDeL)

The psychology group is a strong and growing research group with an emphasis on critical and qualitative work in psychology, within an interdisciplinary setting.

The group holds regular seminars and aims to be a British leader in the development of critical and qualitative research and teaching.

The group hosts the editorial office of the International Journal of Critical Psychology, is the international co-ordinator for the International Association of Critical Psychology and the Critical Psychology Network. The group has a growing cohort of PhD students. Applications are welcomed from psychologists and social scientists interested in critical and qualitative approaches.

Psychology Teaching

Psychology in the School of Social Sciences is in the process of expanding. We currently offer British Psychological Society accredited undergraduate psychology on the BA Education. We plan to offer an accredited psychology track within the new interdisciplinary BSc in Social Sciences and a suite of masters degrees, including a new masters in critical psychology.

The Education Work and Lifelong Learning Group (EdWoLL)

This group is located both in CERG and CREST. Its research programme is concerned with three inter-related themes: learning, work and labour markets; occupational and professional learning; and the post-school experience of young people. It has developing interests in the restructuring of higher education and graduate employment. The full range of its research projects are shown below.
