Centre for Global Labour Research (CGLR) Colloquium - ‘Vulnerable Workers’
On 29 October 2008 a one day colloquium was held by the Centre for Global Labour Research in attempt to take stock of the state of play concerning debates about worker vulnerability. It was attended by 40 people from universities in the UK and abroad, from the Welsh TUC and amongst others, the department of Business Enterprise and Regulatory Reform.
The colloquium examined the material situation in the UK including low wages, legal constraints, the position of unorganised workers; the adequacy of ideas and policies about vulnerability as utilised, for example, in the DTI’s Success at Work: Protecting Vulnerable Workers, Supporting Good Employers and by the TUC’s Commission on Vulnerable Employment; and compared ideas in other countries about precarité and precarious employment.
