Research at the Cardiff School of Social Sciences is interdisciplinary, innovative and has impact. In the 2008 national Research Assessment Exercise the School was recognised as first in the UK on the ‘Research Power’ measure by the Sociology sub-panel. We are committed to the promotion of public and policy social science informed by extensive external collaboration and cooperation. The School has particular clusters of research excellence in the fields of Sociology and Education, both broadly defined.

 

Indicators of Research Excellence

  • Since 2008 the School has secured research grants totally in excess of £38 million. We have the highest per capita external grant capture of any Social Science department in the country.
  • Amongst our staff we have a Fellow of the British Academy; five Academicians of the Academy of Social Sciences; a winner of the Lifetime Achievement Award of the British Sociological Association; A Fellow of the Royal Swedish Academy of Agriculture and Forestry; and Fellows of the Learned Society of Wales.
  • We host numerous international visitors and speakers. Recently these have included: Prof. Michael Burawoy; Prof. Randall Collins; Sir Michael Marmot; Madeleine Bunting; and Prof. Danny Dorling.
  • We are partners in the ESRC What Works Centre for Crime Reduction, host the Wales Institute for Social and Economic Research, Data & Methods and the ESRC Wales Doctoral Training Centre, and lead DECIPHER (Centre for the Development and Evaluation of Complex Interventions for Public Health Improvement).
