Are you interested in studying for a Professional Doctorate in Education, Social Work and Health Studies? Professional Doctorates are distinguished from the PhD in both form and rationale: they involve a significant proportion of teaching as well as a smaller research thesis and their aim is to integrate academic and professional knowledge. Our next cohort starts in January 2011, so register your interest now.

In Cardiff School of Social Sciences we offer an integrated professional doctorate scheme within which education, social work and health professionals work together for some of the taught modules. This unique inter-professional learning allows students to reflect on both what is shared across professional boundaries and what is distinctive to their own occupational traditions.

Education

The Cardiff EdD has been running since 1997, with more than 50 candidates having enrolled since then. It is one of the leading programmes of its kind, drawing on the expertise of a staff group of which 25% were considered to be world-leading (4*) and 30% internationally excellent (3*) in the 2008 RAE Exercise. Above all, a professional doctorate is an opportunity for learning about research and developing research-aware professional practice. Cardiff School of Social Sciences is a centre of research excellence and as an EdD student you will be taught by some of the leading experts in the education field.

Social Work

The Cardiff DSW is one of only a very small number of similar degrees across the UK. Above all, a professional doctorate is an opportunity for learning about research and developing research-aware professional practice. Cardiff University School of Social Sciences is a centre of research excellence and as a DSW student you will be taught by leading experts on social work and social policy. Cardiff was until recently the home of the premier British journal for social work theory and research, the British Journal of Social Work and it also hosts the journal of the Social Services Research Association Research, Policy and Planning.

Health Studies

The Cardiff DHS was launched in January 2004. We believe it is the first such degree in the UK, and the curriculum has been developed in the light of market research with senior health professionals. Above all, a professional doctorate is an opportunity for learning about research and developing research-aware professional practice. Cardiff School of Social Sciences is a centre of research excellence and as a DHS student you will be taught by leading social scientific experts in the field of health.
