New multi-million pound project helps shape Wales of tomorrow

Academic schools from across the University have joined together to establish an interdisciplinary social science research centre of excellence for Wales.
Drawing on the substantive and methodological expertise of staff from the Schools of Social Sciences, City and Regional Planning, European Studies, Business, and Law, the University is leading The Wales Institute of Social and Economic Research, Data and Methods (WISERD) - a £9M project which will help government, policy makers, and businesses better tackle major social problems in Wales. Key-note lecture by Children's Commissioner for Wales, Keith Towler

The School of Social Sciences were very pleased to welcome the new Children's Commissioner for Wales, Keith Towler to give a key-note lecture as part of a day seminar in the School on 26th June. Findings from five recent research projects with looked after children were represented at the seminar. Topics included advocacy services, successful foster care, education and assessing identities. Over 100 practitioners, carers, social work educators and researchers attended the event.

Ahead of Wimbledon fortnight (23 June to 6 July), researchers from Cardiff University are advising that sports decision aids such as the Hawk-Eye system should come with a ‘health’ warning attached. Led by Professor Harry Collins and Dr Robert Evans, the team argues that such devices could cause viewers to overestimate the ability of any technological devices to resolve disagreement among humans. Mathematical Images and Identities:education, entertainment, social justice was an ESRC funded study carried out from April 2006 until July 2007 by Professor Debbie Epstein (Cardiff School of Social Sciences, Cardiff University), Dr Heather Mendick (who was the Principal Investigator) and Marie-Pierre Moreau (both at the Institute for Policy Studies in Education at London Metropolitan University), the findings of which are generating much media interest (see links at end). The project looked at the representations of mathematics and mathematicians in popular culture and the ways that they influence learners’ relationships with the subject. More

First ever cohort of Teachers funded by the General Teaching Council for Wales “Chartered Teaching Programme”

The School of Social Sciences welcomed the first ever cohort of Teachers funded by the General Teaching Council for Wales “Chartered Teaching Programme”.
Fifteen teachers from across South Wales enrolled on the Advanced Teacher Development module which is part of the GTC’s programme pilot. Chartered Teacher status will be a new professional milestone which enhances the work of highly skilled classroom teachers. More

Mr Don Eliseo Lucero-Prisno III, in his third year of a PhD at SOCSI as a Nippon Foundation Fellow under the Seafarers International Research Centre, has recently won an award in the Shine 2008 International Student Awards. To enter the awards, International student have to write a letter home, in English, to a close friend or relative informing them of all the ways they are benefiting from their time in the UK. Evaluation of the Effectiveness of the Safer Communities Fund 2006-2009

The Welsh Assembly Government has awarded Professor Gordon Hughes from the Cardiff School of Social Sciences and the Crime and Justice Research Group a grant of £115, 838 to undertake an evaluation of its Safer Communities Fund which is targeted at local youth engagement and social crime prevention programmes and projects. Professor Ruth Milkman visited the Centre for Global Labour Research and the School of Social Sciences from Tuesday 11 March until 20 March 2008. She is Professor of Sociology and Director of the Institute for Research on Labor and Employment at University of California, Los Angeles. Her research focus is on work and unionism in the U.S. in the past and present, and especially its relationship to gender and immigration.

30 year 6 children, their teacher and a classroom assistant from Afon-y-Felin Primary School in North Cornelly descended on the Glamorgan Building on Friday 30th November 2007 as part of outreach work organised by the Regeneration Institute and widening access scheme initiated by the School of Social Sciences at Cardiff University.
