SKOPE Seminar: Using the National Employer Skills Survey
Starts: 28 November 2008
Speakers: Martina Aumeyr and Rhys Davies (VML), National Office of Statistics
12.00 – 2.00pm, 28th November 2008 (lunch will be provided)
Room 1.65 in CPLAN (entrance via Glamorgan Building)
This seminar will showcase recent work by the Office of National Statistics’ Virtual Micro-data Laboratory (VML). The VML allows researchers access to restricted micro-data for research purposes. The seminar will also examine the research potential of a new resource, the National Employers Skills Survey 2007.
In the past the VML has used Employer Skills Survey data, linked to that from other surveys, to explore issues to do with skills and productivity. The LSC were able include a new question in their 2007 NESS that asked respondents to indicate their willingness to allow data from their NESS returns to be linked to data from other sources, and 73 per cent of respondents (61,089) agreed. This means that far more detailed work will be possible in future that will allow micro-level linkages between NESS returns and other ONS data sets –for example on firm performance and output. The seminar will offer an opportunity for researchers to explore with ONS what opportunities this development creates.
