What’s in a picture? Bringing the context of photo-production into the interpretative process

Abstract: The paper makes visible the act of image production in order to explore the ways in which images make their meanings. Drawing on ethnographic research with children and young people in which the children worked alongside researchers in order to create a visual narrative of their lives, the paper suggests that a focus on the ways in which images are made, brings into view the ways in which the visual gains its meaning from the process through which it is produced. Analytic focus on these contexts brings an important dimension to the interpretative challenges generated by the visual, not least that grammatically unchanged images can be read in different ways, by different audiences at different moments in time.
