Tuesday 18th September, 12.30pm - 2.00pm, Room 0.85, Cardiff School of Social Sciences

We are delighted to begin the programme of British Sociological Association (BSA) Wales regional (Wales) events on Tuesday 18th September.  Gareth Williams, from Cardiff School of Social Sciences, will talk about 'Medical Sociology 1978-2008 and Beyond: Thoughts from Exile'. This informal talk is designed to open up discussion about the changing face of medical sociology over the last thirty years and its prospects for the future.  'Exile' expresses the presenter's own sense of his career development, and his perception of the changing landscape of the sociology of health and illness.

Gareth Williams is Professor of Sociology at Cardiff University and is also Deputy Director of the Regeneration Institute (a joint initiative with the Department of City and Regional Planning), Associate Director of the Cardiff Institute of Society Health and Ethics (CISHE), Director of the Welsh Health Impact Assessment Support Unit (WHIASU), and Chair of the All Wales Alliance for R&D in Health and Social Care (AWARD). He has published widely in academic and professional journals, has written and edited a number of books and has grant income totalling over £5.6 million.

The event is free and no booking is required, however it would be good if you could register your intention to attend by emailing Rebecca (DimondR1@Cardiff.ac.uk)  in order to assist us with venue planning.  The British Sociological Society (BSA) MedSoc group promotes scholarship and communication in the field of the sociology of health and illness in the UK.  Medsoc is one of the largest and most active study groups of the BSA. As the Wales regional group hasn’t met for a long time, this event will also be a great opportunity to discuss the kinds of events we want to see in future. If you would like to get involved in the regional group or have ideas about future events, then please get in touch  with Rebecca (DimondR1@cf.ac.uk) or Sara (MacBride-StewartS@cf.ac.uk)
