In our research at the Rhondda Heritage Park, we chose three kinds of
structure to guide our use of the camera: narrative, interview-based and episodic.
This page provides some examples and discussion of each type to be read in conjunction
with pp.129-32 of the book.
Narrative oriented camera work
This comprised video data of the museum’s ex-miner guides as they went
about their daily tasks. We began filming from the moment of their arrival
at work in the morning and continued through to their departure home at the
end of the day. Expand.>>>
Interview-based camera-work
This aspect of our fieldwork comprised ethnographic sit-down interviews with
guides in pairs and, separately, with six visitor groups. Expand.>>>
Episode-oriented camera-work
In this aspect of our video fieldwork, we filmed each of our six visitor groups
as they took part in the guided tours around the museum. Expand.>>>
Technical Help
All of the videos in these pages are in Windows Media format (wmv) which means
that you will need either Windows Media Player or another player which can
play WMV files in order to view them. Most PC's should have this functionality
as standard. The videos vary between 5MB and 10MB in length so we do not recommend
trying to play them on a dial-up connection. You may download these videos
for personal and educational use but you do not have permission to distribute
them further. Contact us via the main page if
you have further questions or are interested in gaining access to higher-quality
versions.
