| Welcome to the Cardiff
School of Social Sciences Hypermedia and Qualitative Research
webpage. This site contains information on three ESRC
funded projects into the use of hypermedia in ethnographic
research. The first project "The
Production of Hypermedia Ethnography" (Paul
Atkinson, Amanda
Coffey, Bella
Dicks and Bruce
Mason) ran between 1997-1999 and aimed to explore the
implications of applying a "hypertext strategy" to all phases
of qualitative research. The second project "Ethnography
for the Digital Age" (Amanda
Coffey, Bella
Dicks, Bruce
Mason, Emma
Renold, Bambo
Soyinka and Matthew
Williams) ran between 2002-2004 and aimed to address the
theoretical, methodological and empirical implications of
undertaking substantive qualitative research that exploits
the full possibilities of contemporary information and communication
technologies. The current project "Methodological
Issues in Qualitative Data Sharing and Archiving"
(Amanda
Coffey, Bella
Dicks, Matthew
Williams and Bruce
Mason) is funded under the ESRC's Qualitative Data Sharing
and Research Archiving Scheme. It aims to explore and develop
protocols for the archiving and sharing of qualitative multi-media
datasets.
Methodological
Issues in Qualitative Data Sharing and Archiving (2005-2006)
This demonstrator project will explore how to design qualitative
research methods appropriate for the eventual archiving, distribution
and sharing of digital data-sets. Its specific focus will
be on methodology, since to date few, if any, guidelines exist
to assist researchers in making methodological decisions where
data-sharing and archiving are planned. More...
Ethnography
for the Digital Age (2002-2004)
"Ethnography for the Digital Age" was funded by the ESRC
as part of their Research
Methods Programme. The project aimed to develop an integrated,
digital, hypermedia environment for data collection, analysis
and authoring in qualitative research. A primary objective
was to address the theoretical, methodological and empirical
implications of undertaking substantive qualitative research
that exploits the full possibilities of contemporary information
and communication technologies. More...
The Production
of Hypermedia Ethnography (1997-1999)
The goal of that project was to explore the implications
of applying a "hypertext strategy" to all phases of qualitative
research. We combined some of the ethnographic research previously
conducted by Dr. Bella Dicks at the Rhondda Heritage Park
with new digital ethnographic materials that focused on the
guides who work there and the encoding of meaning at the site.
Using a mixture of the old and new materials we created a
prototypical ethnographic hypermedia environment (EHE). More...
