The Cardiff School of Social Sciences is a thriving centre of teaching and research in the fields of Sociology, Educational Studies, Psychosocial Studies (Psychology), Social Policy, Criminology and Social Work, with an international reputation in all areas. Around 350 undergraduates join the School each year.
The School offers full degree schemes in Education, Criminology, Sociology, and Social Science and two British Psychological Society (BPS) accredited pathways in psychology: Education BPS and Social Science BPS. Education, Social Policy, Criminology and Sociology can be studied in combination with each other and subjects in other departments.
All the degree schemes are modular and designed to deliver the central tenets of their respective disciplines whilst leaving students free to exercise choice and select modules reflecting their personal interests and needs.
In each year of their degree students are required to study a number of compulsory core modules and a selection from the range of modules offered with the School as a whole.
We welcome applicants from all backgrounds who demonstrate a commitment to their chosen subject(s) of study. In particular we are keen to encourage applicants who have undertaken some form of education in subjects allied to the social sciences. Largely for the purposes of transparency in selecting candidates we normally require applicants to have undertaken some educational qualification (see "Admissions" section within the prospectus below) within the last two years. With an international reputation for cutting-edge ideas and a strong commitment to theoretically-informed research with a clear policy focus the School of Social Sciences encourages applicants who share our appetite for advancing our understanding of a diverse and fast-changing social world.
