Sociology of health and illness, medical bioethics, neuroscience, research as clinical practice, ethnographic methods, STS, clinician - patient relationship, disease categorisation and flexibility.
Biography
Before becoming a mature student, I had a varied career in the Ministry of Defence, the NHS, the Electricity industry and the Financial Services.
I studied Sociology and Psychology at undergraduate level and moved to Socsi, Cardiff in 2002 as a Research Associate investigating the effect of genetic diagnosis on insurance behaviour. I achieved MSc in Social Science Research Methods during the project, and was awarded ESRC +3 funding to begin a PhD in 2006. Taught on undergraduate courses of The Body, Health & Medicine, Advanced Sociology of Health and Illness. Post graduate teaching MSc. SSRM, & MSc. Genetic Counselling.
PhD Topic / Area
Ethnographic study of a neuroscience research clinic for patients with a fatal genetic condition. The study examined what effect the clinic has on patients and families understanding of research, how clinicians perform research in the clinic and what are the implications of the movement of the disease from a category of ‘genetic illness’ to a ‘group/series of neurological effects’.
Thesis submitted in October 2010 and PhD awarded in November 2010.
