PhD Topic/ Area
My PhD investigates gendered power relations within teenage heterosexual relationship cultures. I am interested in how 14-16 year olds negotiate their own gendered and sexual identities within the context of a culture where teen sexuality is a frequent focal point of anxiety. The mixed-methods study investigates teenagers’ personal experiences, as well as their understandings of and opinions on relationships, including negative experiences such as controlling and abusive behaviour. My particular focus is on middle-class young people, exploring how their classed subjectivities shape (and are shaped by) their sexualities, relationships and peer cultures.
