PhD Topic / Area
Title: An Ethnographic Exploration of the Biological Study of Ageing
Using an ethnographic approach, I am exploring the emergence of the scientific field of 'biogerontology' (the biological study of the ageing process). Whilst I seek to understand the 'science' that is being done to slow/stop the ageing process as well as why and how it is being done, I am interested in the management of the social, cultural and ethical aspects of the science. I am also interested in scientists' re-categorisation of ageing as a disease and why and how shared cultural understandings of ageing are being re-configured according to this re-categorisation.
