PhD Topic/ Area
The study uses a psychosocial, longitudinal methodology to explore the experiences of young people undertaking voluntary work in a ‘developing’ country as part of a gap year. I am interested to know how these experiences engender certain understandings of self and other and how they are integrated into emergent adult biographies and identities. My work focuses particularly on the ethical dimensions of volunteer tourism and aims to understand how volunteer tourists justify their actions, present ethical selves and negotiate their relative wealth and privilege in encounters with poverty. The study uses in-depth interviews to be conducted before, during and after participants’ volunteer placements abroad.
