Research Interests
My research interests focus on two main areas, understanding and explaining health related behaviours within their social context and the evaluation of theoretically driven public health improvement initiatives, with a particular concern with the social processes that impact on implementation and effectiveness. To this end I have written extensively on the need to develop theoretical explanations of behaviour that take account of both individual agency and structural influences and have undertaken a large number of evaluations of complex interventions utilising mixed methodologies. I am responsible for leading the Health Promoting School and other Youth Settings theme within DECIPHer. I am particularly keen to develop the quality of public health improvement research and take a leading role in the Public Health Improvement Research Network.
