About Us (SOCSI)

Cardiff School of Social Sciences is a large School with more than 160 staff and a thousand undergraduate and postgraduate students. The 2008 Research Assessment Exercise rated almost all of its research to be of an international standard with 55% of it either “world leading” or “internationally excellent”. This rating, together with the size of the School, places it amongst the top five centres in the UK.
Our teaching is research led and also reflects the School’s inter-disciplinary focus. Here, undergraduates and postgraduates are taught about the latest ideas within the social sciences by internationally recognised scholars who are themselves shaping the future of their respective fields
The School is committed to theoretically informed research with a clear policy focus. Much of our research involves collaboration with major universities and international agencies around the world. It also involves us in local contacts with policy makers and practitioners. This creative combination of interests and practices is the hall mark of the School.
Since its creation in 2000, the School has attracted over £18 million of research funds for projects that range across questions of genetics and society; ethics and public health; science and expertise; culture and the human subject; childhood and intimacy; educational change and policy reform; the learning society; employability and the labour market; the global economy; state, labour and corporate change; local regeneration; international crime; and local police practice.
The Glamorgan Building has a friendly and busy atmosphere - full of students; lectures; seminars; conferences and workshops. It offers an excellent environment for students and staff. It is also a very enjoyable place to visit.
