Universities in Wales Institute of Classics and Ancient History (UWICAH)

Head of a kore (Acropolis 696), Athens

The Institute brings together the three Welsh Classics and Ancient History departments, in Cardiff, Swansea and Lampeter, providing opportunities for staff and postgraduate students to meet and discuss their research.

UWICAH organises an annual colloquium at Gregynog Hall in mid-Wales, at which staff and postgraduates present papers. UWICAH members play a prominent role in organising panels at the biennial Celtic Conference in Classics, which rotates between Wales, Scotland, Ireland and Brittany, and an extensive programme of international conferences at various sites in Wales; themes have included Archaic Greece, Caesar as Artful Reporter, Herakles/Hercules, Organized Crime in Antiquity, Eunuchs in Antiquity and Beyond, Dress in the Ancient Greek World, and The Hellenistic World.

Many of these conferences are published by the Classical Press of Wales, which is closely associated with the Institute and also publishes monographs and collections of papers written by researchers from universities in Wales and beyond.
