Frequently Asked Questions (MA/Diploma Islam)

Here are the answers to some frequently asked questions. If you still have a query about the course that is not covered here, or in the 'General Information' page, please contact us and we will respond to you as soon as possible.

1) Can I combine study for the MA/Diploma with full-time work?

  • The answer to this questions will depend upon:
  • the hours you work
  • whether your employer is willing to regard your study as part of your professional development
  • whether you decide to study part-time or full-time
  • whether you choose to take the MA or the Diploma.

If you are working full-time, the part-time Diploma option may be the best for you. You would study one module, per academic year. This would involve being able to attend up to 6 hours of teaching per week, for a 10 week period, each academic year. You could decide to 'upgrade' to the MA, having successfully completed the Diploma. For more information about different 'pathways' through the course, see the navigation bar on the left.

2) What sort of resources does Cardiff University have for this course?

The University library has an excellent collection of books, journals, and on-line resources. If you want to check it out for yourself, go to the Voyager library catalogue.

3) How many students will be on the course?

There is a maximum of 15 places on the course. You are strongly advised to apply as soon as possible in order to secure a place.

4) Why is Cardiff University the best place for a postgraduate course about Islam and Muslims in Britain?

The City of Cardiff has a long history of Muslim settlement. It is recognised as having one of the oldest Muslim communities in Britain; with some of the first mosques in the UK established in Cardiff. From this early history, there is now a sizeable and well-established Muslim population in the City, making Cardiff the best place to appreciate the full and dynamic history of British Islam.

Cardiff University is now a leading institution for postgraduate scholarly teaching about Muslims in contemporary Britain. The 'Centre for the Study of Islam in the UK' is based in the School of Religious and Theological Studies, which was awarded the highest possible grade (a 5*) in the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE). We have a wealth of teaching expertise and a lively programme of research activity.

The Centre for the Study of Islam in the UK has a strong and positive relationship with the local Muslim community, and members of the community form part of the Centre's advisory committee. We are proud of this partnership.

5) Where do I find information about funding?

You can start off by exploring Cardiff University's web site on funding opportunities for postgraduate study. You may also like to consider seeking funding from private sources. Please note that any application you make to any of the sources of funding listed in Cardiff University's web site will not be considered if you do not have a firm offer of a place to study. It is therefore important that you apply for the MA/Diploma well in advance of the closing date for funding applications as set by the relevant funding agency.

6) How do I apply?

Please click here for further details about the application process. You can also download the necessary forms and information available on the right hand side of this page (under Resources).

You are strongly advised to submit your application as soon as you can. It is only possible to begin the course at the start of the new academic year (late September/early October).

7) What's the difference between the MA and the Diploma?

All students study for the taught Modules 1, 2 and 3. Those doing the MA then complete their course with an additional 16,000 word dissertation based upon independent research, supervised by the Course Director.
