The Syrian desert witnessed some of the most interesting and impressive cases of human ascetic behaviour. For a long time the early Christian stylites have attracted the attention of church historians and religious historians. What is less known is that they have also inspired modern writers and filmmakers.

This workshop addresses this shortfall by bringing together the study of early Christian stylitism, including its roots in ancient Syrian religion, with the latest in surrealist film studies.
