Austria and Germany 1866-1945, Part II - 20 credits (HST881)

The unit examines issues of modernity versus political and cultural traditionalism, nationalism, cultural and racial antisemitism, state-building, imperialism, revolution, and the rise of authoritarianism and National Socialism in modern Germany and Austria. It considers the effect of the First World War on German and Austrian politics, culture and society, and seeks explanations for the failure of Weimar Democracy and of the First Austrian Republic and the rise of the Nazis. The course concludes with the destruction of the German state brought about the Nazi regime.
