Reading French Newspapers (1870-1914) - 10 credits (HST824)

This course explores the nature, potential and pitfalls of using newspapers as a source for the social, cultural, gender and political history of France after 1914. The newspapers used are those of political parties (the Alliance démocratique, Croix de Feu and Parti communiste français), as well as the daily paper L’Echo de Paris. Students will discuss and evaluate the different ways in which newspapers may be read – hermeneutics, deconstruction, reading against the grain, for example.
