An Introduction to Early Modern Palaeography - 10 credits (HST813)
This module introduces students to sixteenth- and seventeenth-century alphabets, hands, abbreviations, and forms commonly used in manuscript sources. Through a series of practical workshops, students will develop palaeographic and transcription skills and an understanding of how early modern manuscripts were produced. By the end of the course, students will be able to read, interpret and accurately transcribe a range of early modern manuscript sources and will be aware of potential difficulties that they may encounter in using manuscript sources for historical research and of potential solutions. The module will equip students with sufficient skills to begin to use of manuscript sources in their own research.
