Belief and Disbelief in the Middle Ages - 20 credits (HST634)

The aim of this module is to introduce students to different forms of religious experience and expression during the supposed medieval 'age of piety', including scepticism and criticism of religious beliefs and practices, and heresy. Students will examine the motivating factors and social roles of various forms of religious expression and religious protest during this period. Subjects will include the new forms of religious expression which developed during the eleventh and twelfth centuries, satire, lay piety and pilgrimage, and superstition.
