France, 1870-1914 - 20 credits (HST632)
In the period 1870-1914, France witnessed the establishment of the only republic in a major European state. The course will examine the development of a republican culture, through the examination of the social history of the French republican bourgeoisie, its endeavour to establish an intellectual culture based on science and reason, its notions of masculinity and femininity, its anticlericalism, and its conception of national identity. The course will also examine challenges to this culture, from the labour movement, feminism, the Church and the radical right. The course will also examine key developments in the economic, social and intellectual history of the period.
