Polymers in Conservation - 20 credits (HS2110)

Polymers are important in conservation. Much cultural material that conservators treat is comprised of natural polymers, and synthetic polymers are extensively used as adhesives, coatings and consolidants when applying treatments to objects. Knowledge of the structures and properties of polymeric materials is essential for good conservation practice. This module provides an overview of chemical structures, physical properties, ageing characteristics and the applications of polymers in conservation.

METHODS OF TEACHING: Ten one hour lectures. .

METHODS OF ASSESSMENT: One 1 hour examination (Autumn) (50%), One assessed essay (50%).
