Special Topic: Celtic Christianity - 20 credits (RTT313)

The study of Christianity in late antique and early medieval Ireland and Wales provokes numerous theological, historical and archaeological issues and questions stimulated by a diverse range of literary, hagiographical, epigraphic and material evidence. Aspects and areas of continuity between the religious and cultural features of medieval Irish and Welsh Christianity and the late antique continental forms of the religion are clearly identifiable; however, it is arguable that the presence of Christianity in the insular world resulted in certain unique and distinctive forms of Christian cultural expression. This module will enable students to investigate further the nature of Christianity in these Celtic lands.
