Crusader Ideology - 20 credits (HST907)

This course considers the ideological basis of crusading from the time of the First Crusade (1095-99) to the present day. It examines how the crusades were justified by those who preached them and those who took part, and why others criticised the crusades. It also considers the contribution chivalry made to crusading ideology and how crusading became an essential part of knighthood, as well as the contribution which crusading ideology has made to ‘national’ identities.
