Building the Devil’s Bridge: Studies in german art + history since 1800. German painting and other visual arts of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries provide a rich seam for discovering social, cultural and political discourses. This project explores these through the detailed analysis and comparison of images.
The research objectives are to make connections across time between German political and social history and its visual iconography. The aim is the publication of a book, the structure of which is thematic, not chronological, taking eight fundamental features of German history and visual art and exploring them through images and themes from the last two centuries.
The project has been funded by the British Academy and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation to the value of £7471 + €7350.
