Research Profile: Electrical and Electronic Engineering

Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the Cardiff School of Engineering has earned a reputation for excellence and is addressing key contemporary challenges in the fields of high frequency and communications engineering, digital signal processing, high voltage systems, renewable energy, magnetics, and electronic materials and devices.

The School’s exceptional work in electrical energy technologies was underlined by its appointment as one of four National Grid High Voltage University Research Centres. The aim of the Centre is to provide research and consultancy services and to establish close collaborative partnerships between university researchers and company engineers.

Researchers in electrical and electronic engineering are addressing key contemporary challenges on electrical energy technologies, information technologies and materials and devices.


Energy research within the School received a further boost from an award of £3.8M from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) to establish the Centre for Integrated Renewable Energy Generation and Supply.  The Centre will address the challenges of integrating large amounts of renewable energy and distributed generation into electricity networks and is committed to researching innovative and cost-effective solutions.

In high frequency communications engineering, the School is equipped with state-of-the art RF/microwave measurement facilities enabling researchers to undertake projects aimed at solving the RF/microwave design challenges limiting the performance of satellite, wireless, optical or medical telecommunications systems. The School has also invested £1.3M in infrastructure within this research area, creating a unique experimental base and establishing the interdisciplinary Communications Research Centre (CRC). The Centre also involves colleagues from the Schools of Psychology and Computer Science collaborating on signal processing and information fusion.

Research within the School in advanced materials has also benefited from investment of £2.7M from the Science Research Infrastructure Fund (SRIF) for the development of the Wolfson Centre for Magnetics.
