School Research Ethics Committees (SRECs)

Schools vary widely in the scope and significance of the ethical issues affecting their research.  Some Schools regularly engage in clinical research that requires the approval of an NHS Trust Research Ethics Committee (LREC, MREC). Others have significant numbers of research students whose studies involve human participants.  Some Schools host research projects involving the recruitment of people as participants of research, whilst other Schools may not engage in any of these activities.

Each School has considered the precise nature of the potential ethical issues in the conduct of its proposed research, and consequently the procedures adopted by Schools for conducting ethical review reflects these considerations.  Proportionate review has been the key to successfully implementing the School procedures.
