About Us

Research and Innovation Services

Cardiff University is an ambitious and innovative university with a bold and strategic vision located in a beautiful and thriving capital city.  Our research is world-leading and we provide an educationally outstanding experience for our students.  Driven by creativity and curiosity, we strive to fulfil our social, cultural and economic obligations to Cardiff, Wales, and the world.  With an annual budget of £460 million, around 6,000 staff and over 28,500 students, it is a member of the Russell Group of the 24 leading UK research-intensive universities.

The University’s ambition is to rank consistently among the top 100 universities in the world and the top 20 in the UK.  In doing so, we will focus on key areas of education, research and innovation, internationalisation and engagement.  This ambition and strategic direction is set out in ‘The Way Forward 2012-17’ which can be accessed from Cardiff University’s home page at:  http://www.cardiff.ac.uk/about/home

Cardiff University is also developing its Innovation System through an ambitious programme of investment in people and in its Research and Innovation infrastructure.  Research funding awards from competitive, external sources (grants and contracts) exceed £100 million annually and the University aims to grow this further through winning grants from the Research Councils and charities, industry, government and from European Commission and a range of other international sources.

Research and Innovation Services is one of the nine corporate Professional Services Departments in the University.  The Department’s primary responsibility is to support the University’s three Colleges, their Academic Schools and Academic staff in generating income from external sources for research, innovation, engagement, commercialisation and international activities.  We are based on the 6th and 7th floors of McKenzie House, 30-36 Newport Road, at the south end of the campus and near to Cardiff city centre with further offices serving the Heath Park (biomedical and health) campus and the Cardiff Innovation System and Engagement initiatives (at 60 Park Place).

The Director of Research and Innovation Services is Geraint Jones, and the Department’s work is organised around five functional groups:

Research Grants Office:  led by Lucy Rees (Head of Pre-Awards), Kathryn Sinclair (Head of Post-Awards) and Cerys Phillips (Head of European Funding)

Research Governance and Contracts:  led by Dr Kathy Pittard Davies, Deputy Director.

Research Development and European Office:  led by Dr Dave Bembo, Deputy Director.

Commercial Development:  led by Dr Nick Bourne, Deputy Director.

Innovation System and Engagement:  led by Rhys Thomas, Acting Head.
