Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014
Every six years the Higher Education Funding Councils, on behalf of the British Government, undertake an independent assessment of the quality of research in Britain's universities.
The 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF) is the new process for assessing research in UK Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) and is the successor to the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE).
Management of the implementation of Cardiff’s 2014 REF strategy used established university processes with line-management through the university’s normal channels, from Vice Chancellor to Heads of School, who are in turn responsible for the staff within their schools.
Preparation and implementation of the REF strategy was delegated to the REF sub-group of the University Executive Board. The chair of the REF sub-group was Professor Hywel Thomas, Pro Vice-Chancellor, Research, Innovation and Enterprise.
