Cardiff University is keen to promote a formalised approach to identifying and managing its environmental impact. Systems which are put in place allow for setting objectives and targets to ensure that best practice is implemented.

Cardiff University is committed to implementing the International Standard for Environmental Management Systems – EMS ISO 14001 and aims to roll-out its implementation across the entire campus over the next twelve months or so. In fact, the University in partnership with Cardiff and Vale Trust achieved 14001 certification for the Heath Park campus as far back as 2003.

A Task & Finish Group set up within the Welsh School of Pharmacy in collaboration with OSHEU, recently completed a Baseline Environmental Review of the School’s activities including its current environmental management and compliance with environmental legislation.

The review considered items such as the School’s organisational profile, pollution control, use of materials, energy consumption and waste disposal, water use and discharge, recycling, building and infrastructure transport, legal implications and best practice awareness.

Completion of the Baseline Review resulted in an action plan being agreed with OSHEU who will audit the School after six months to monitor the progress of the plan.

By managing our interaction with the environment, by encouraging waste reduction, preservation of natural resources by adoption of sustainable procurement and efficiencies of scale and by adopting a proactive approach to environmental management, the School can look beyond compliance and should see real benefits in reduced costs, a reduction in energy consumption and a reduction of pollution to water, land and air.
