“Targeting Inhaled Drugs Within and Beyond the Lungs: Pathology, Physiology, Pharmacology & Patients”
Omar Usmani is Clinical Senior Lecturer and Honorary Consultant Physician in Respiratory Medicine at the National Heart & Lung Institute (NHLI), Imperial College London and Royal Brompton Hospital, London, UK. He qualified in Medicine at King’s College London and completed a PhD at Imperial College London. His doctoral research into Medical Inhalers and Aerosol Science received the 2005 Prize for the Best PhD Thesis and an Alavi-Mandell award from the American Society of Nuclear Medicine.
Omar is currently leader of the Clinical Research Group within the Airway Disease Section at NHLI and Clinical Lead for the Royal Brompton Hospital specialist Chronic Cough Service. His clinical focus is on asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and chronic cough, with research interests in respiratory pharmacology, airway molecular biology, inhaled drug delivery, lung imaging and small airways pathophysiology.
Omar has been awarded a National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Career Development Fellowship to investigate the relationship between the lung deposition behaviour of inhaled bronchodilator aerosols of different particle size within the airways of patients with COPD. This is the first time this award category has been given to Respiratory Science research in the UK. His other collaborative research projects explore lung deposition prediction by mathematical models; charged atmospheric effects on particulate lung deposition; oropharyngeal deposition using realistic throat models.
Omar is Vice-Chair of Drug Delivery to the Lungs (DDL) and a member of the steering committee of the Small Airways Working Group of the World Allergy Organization (WAO). He is also Associate Editor of the journals Respiration and Cough.
