“Alzheimer's disease therapeutics - clearing the confusion” 

Tony Bayer is Professor of Geriatric Medicine in the Cochrane Institute of Primary Care and Public Health in the School of Medicine at Cardiff University and Director of the Memory Team, based at University Hospital Llandough. He has a longstanding interest in cognitive impairment and dementia associated with neurodegenerative and cerebrovascular diseases and in clinical care of older people and initiated one of the earliest Memory Clinics in the UK in 1986 that now receives over 1400 new referrals per year. He was an investigator in the Phase 2/3 trials of all the currently licenced drugs for Alzheimer’s disease, was PI for the first human trial of active immunotherapy with beta amyloid (AN 1792) and continues to be an active trialist of potential new therapies in dementia. Other current research activity includes collaboration on the Caerphilly Prospective Study (CaPS) of stroke, heart disease and dementia, the EC-funded MidFrail Study and the HTA - funded GREAT Study of cognitive rehabilitation. He has over 200 peer-reviewed publications and 20 book chapters and is currently an Academic Editor for PLoS One and Editor-in-Chief of Reviews in Clinical Gerontology. In 2011 he acted as clinical adviser to the NICE Dementia Drugs Appraisal Committee and the BMJ Quality Group and is the Regional Lead for NeuroDem (Wales Dementia Research Network) and OPAN (Older People and Ageing Research Network). Other appointments include membership of the Public Health Committee of the Alzheimer’s Society, the Scientific Advisory Panel of Alzheimer Europe, IAG Global Ageing Research Network and EASD Global Initiative on Diabetes in Older People.
