Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE)
The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive (WEEE Directive) was introduced into UK law in January 2007 by the Waste Electronic and Electrical Equipment Regulations 2006. The Directive aims to reduce the amount of electrical and electronic equipment being produced and to encourage everyone to reuse, recycle and recover it.
The WEEE Directive covers a wide range of electrical and electronic products, although some are exempt from certain requirements.
The types of products covered are:
- large and small household appliances (this includes fridges and freezers
- IT and telecommunication equipment;
- consumer equipment such as TVs, videos, hi-fi
- lighting, electrical and electronic tools (except large stationary industrial tools)
- medical devices (these are exempt from the WEEE recycling and recovery targets)
- monitoring and control instruments
The Regulations place stringent controls on the disposal of redundant electrical and electronic equipment. As part of our commitment to recycling and in order to comply with the legislation introduced under the WEEE Directive, Cardiff University Schools and Directorates must dispose of their WEEE related waste via the approved contractor.
Before disposing of any WEEE related items, please ensure that any re-use options have been exhausted i.e. is there the option to advertise via X-Change?
Items to be disposed of should be clearly marked with the School or Directorate they originate from.
Where Schools are disposing of laboratory equipment (including refrigerators / Freezers) that have been in contact or have used hazardous materials, please ensure that the equipment has been decontaminated using an appropriate approved procedure and any hazard labels have been removed.
Where equipment contains any fluid e.g. oil, toner cartridges etc, these items must be drained/removed and disposed of in the appropriate manner, the DLO will be within their rights to refuse to collect these items unless they have been made safe.
Before arranging a collection, please ensure that you have recorded all redundant equipment that you are disposing of (including refrigerators and Freezers). Schools and Directorates will be responsible for ensuring that their computers hard drives have been wiped of all information, guidance on this can be found at:

The WEEE disposal form must then be completed detailing each item for disposal and full contact details for the collection. The School contact disposing of the items must also sign the confirmation note attached to the form declaring that the hard drives have been satisfactorily wiped.
IF EQUIPMENT REQUIRES MECHANICAL ASSISTANCE TO BE MOVED DUE TO SIZE AND WEIGHT PLEASE HIGHLIGHT THIS WITH THE JOB REQUEST.
Where there are exceptionally large/heavy items which the Estate DLO staff are unable to safely remove, special arrangements need to be made. A separate request must be made directly to Mr Dave Shepherd to arrange a special collection. Depending on the nature of the item, an additional charge may have to be made.
