Cycle Security
Secure your bicycle
- Use the University Cycle Racks. They are situated around the University and at the Halls of Residence. Bicycles attached to railing may be removed.
- Use a "Sold Secure" D-shaped shackle lock. These are available to purchase from the University Security Centre.
- Lock the frame to the cycle locking point and if possible include the wheel(s), particularly if they are quick release.
- Don't leave your bike overnight, unless in secure storage.
Register your bicycle
Make a note of the MAKE, MODEL and SERIAL NUMBER of your bike. Note the description and any unique identifying features.
Any property, not just bicycles, that has a serial number, may be registered on the immobilise national database which is supported by the UK Police Force.
The service is free of charge, and recovered by the police they can check the database and return the property to you.
Property marking
Marking your bicycle can act as a deterrent to theft and may also help the recovery of your bicycle.
Cardiff University Security owns a Bike Stamping Kit (stamps and a hammer) which they can loan to individuals to undertake their own stamping.
Note: There is some concern with the stamping of modern pedal bicycles that owing to the more lightweight metal used, bicycles could be damaged. Security will not accept responsibility for any damage resulting from stamping.
Finally if you see anyone interfering with a bicycle or acting suspiciously, call Extn 74444 (Cathays Park Security) to raise the campus security staff. This number is staffed 24 hours a day.
