The Only Way is UP

20 November 2011

On October 26th, the School launched the latest of its exhibitions. This is an uplifting display of poster images of children with Down’s syndrome, produced by the support group Ups and Downs Southwest. The posters are designed to accentuate the positive aspects of Down’s syndrome, and particularly to celebrate the achievements of young people with the condition.

The launch event, called The Only Way is UP saw children with Down’s syndrome and their families joining in some great activities.

We are grateful to our student volunteers, who ran some of the activities and particularly to 2nd year Kate Evans, who worked throughout the summer to collect sponsorship and carry out fund-raising activities. Well done, Kate.

UCAN, the arts company for children and young people with visual impairment (http://ucanproductions.org/) played a huge part in the event.

Many members helped organise the activities and held workshops in circus skills, audio recording and model making. Charlotte did a great job of creating the Primeval Experience

Cardiff City Football Club, who have their own team of young people with Down’s syndrome, sent along two of their stars to teach ball skills.

A big thrill for the children was Alex Winter, of CBBC, who came along to do story time for the children, and to lead singing games. Even those of us who have never seen CBBC are now huge fans!

We had food provided by Green Shoots Catering, a local organisation which provides employment for disadvantaged people, including those with learning disabilities

Grateful thanks to everyone who made it such a special day!
