A group of talented A-level science students visited the School for the afternoon recently. They were invited as part of the pioneering 'Monmouth science Initiative' - a scheme that gathers enthusiastic science pupils from seven schools and colleges around Monmouthshire (Wales) each week to carry out interesting experiments and advanced classes in Monmouth. They visit Cardiff University three times as part of this club activity, with particular emphasis on engaging and enthusing them about science and its allied careers. In the School of Optometry & Vision Sciences, pupils were able to engage in the research activities in the Contact Lens & Anterior Eye Research Unit led by Dr Christine Purslow and Dr Paul Murphy, looking at how tears and blinking are related in the human eye. They were able to carry out experiments using high-speed thermal imaging and tear collection.
